Gothenburg-based electric carmaker Polestar has announced that its upcoming all-electric vehicle, the Polestar 4, will be the company’s fastest-accelerating production car to date.

Polestar has not revealed the car’s full specifications, but the Polestar 4 will likely accelerate from zero to 62 mph in under four seconds since the Polestar 2 BST edition 230 can perform said feat in 4.4 seconds.

The Swedish startup said the Polestar 4 would be a combination of a coupe and an SUV “in a package enhanced by modern technology.” It is smaller and more aerodynamic than its predecessor, the mid-size SUV Polestar 3.

“Polestar 4 is not simply a modified version of our first SUV,” CEO Thomas Ingenlath said. “Instead, we reconsidered the entire design to create a new breed of SUV coupé.”

Ingenlath told the press in 2021 that the Polestar 4 would retail at around €55,000, placing the car in the similar price range to the Porsche Macan EV and Tesla Model Y.Polestar expects the new series to outperform its first all-electric car Polestar 2 — which recorded 51,491 sales last year — and become its best-selling car by mid-decade.

Polestar 4 will enter production in China near the end of 2023. Its release closely follows the Polestar 3, which will only enter production this summer following a software development issue with the model’s main frame.

Next year, Polestar aims to sell 43,000 units of the Polestar 4 worldwide and 79,000 units the year after. The target is part of the startup’s ambition to produce 160,000 SUV units per year by 2025. The U.S. is Polestar’s main target market in the coming years.

The company will reveal the final design of the Polestar 4 next week at the Shanghai auto show. It has also published a teaser image for the 4, showing the car’s front end. It features similar headlights to the Polestar 3 and deep creases on the sides of the hood.
